Square Canvas Prints for Single Photos and Gallery Walls
Create a square photo canvas with equal sides and a composition chosen by you. Use one image as a focal point or bring several moments together as separate, matching canvases. Choose a product above, then click Upload Photos & Design to position your photo, add text and preview the result.
Will Your Photo Work in a Square?
A square is a 1:1 shape. The strongest image is one that keeps its meaning after the crop, whether the subject sits in the centre or deliberately to one side.
Portraits, children and pets
Look for enough room around the head, chin, ears and paws. A close subject can work beautifully, provided the square crop does not remove a detail you want to keep.
Family groups and celebrations
Check the people at both ends of the group, along with hands and shoulders near the edges. If fitting everyone makes the crop feel forced, compare a rectangle canvas instead.
Places, details and everyday moments
Use a square to draw attention to one tree, building, flower or part of a scene. If the whole wide view tells the story, a panoramic format may suit it better.
Choose the Size for Your Wall, Not Just Your Screen
All sizes below have the same square proportion. A larger option changes the physical scale while the front remains 1:1. Review the preview again after changing the size or wrap.
| Display scale | Available sizes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Small squares | 20 × 20 cm 30 × 30 cm |
A compact individual photo or a starting point for a matching grid. |
| Everyday wall sizes | 40 × 40 cm 50 × 50 cm |
Give a portrait, pet or favourite detail more presence without a very large print. |
| Larger single prints | 60 × 60 cm 75 × 75 cm |
Consider the main subject, viewing distance and space around nearby furniture. |
| Feature squares | 90 × 90 cm 100 × 100 cm |
Mark out the full width and height on the wall and check the cropped original carefully. |
| Oversized squares | 125 × 125 cm 140 × 140 cm |
Plan the wall position first; ask for image advice if you are unsure about a large enlargement. |
Dimensions are shown in centimetres. Select your size on the Square Canvas Prints product page for the current NZD price and available options.
Try the size on the wall: cut a paper square or use removable tape to mark both sides. For several prints, include the gaps before deciding on individual canvas size.
What Happens When a Rectangle Becomes a Square?
Filling a square canvas with a rectangular photo usually removes some of the image. Moving the photo changes which part stays visible.
A simple crop example
Pink sides: removed in this centred example
Keep the important part in view
A 6000 × 4000 pixel landscape image can be cropped to a 4000 × 4000 pixel square. In a centred crop, 1000 pixels are removed from each side. With a portrait image, the extra area is usually above and below.
Move the photo in the editor to favour the detail you want. With the same front crop and zoom, choosing 60 × 60 cm instead of 30 × 30 cm enlarges the square; it does not bring the cropped sides back.
Front crop and side wrap are separate: this example describes the square front face before any extra zoom or side-wrap requirements. Mirror Wrap or Color Wrap can help keep the front image from being used on the sides, but cannot make a rectangular composition fit a square without a change. See the canvas wrap guide.
Plan a Square Canvas Photo Wall Before You Order
Matching square canvases let different photos share a consistent shape. Keep the print size and spacing consistent, then choose images with a similar mood, colour palette or subject scale.
Four 30 cm squares
2 columns × 2 rows, with 5 cm gaps.
Overall: 65 × 65 cm
Six 30 cm squares
3 columns × 2 rows, with 5 cm gaps.
Overall: 100 × 65 cm
Four 40 cm squares
2 columns × 2 rows, with 5 cm gaps.
Overall: 85 × 85 cm
These are layout examples made from separately ordered canvases, not included multi-piece bundles. Measurements include the stated gaps but exclude any added outer frames. The diagrams illustrate the arrangements.
Calculate your own layout: overall width = number of columns × canvas width + the gaps between columns. Use the same calculation for rows and height. The 5 cm gap is an example, not a required spacing.
Design the Crop, Then Check the Whole Collection
Open the product, select the size and click Upload Photos & Design. Adjust the photo, add names or a message if you wish, and use the available previews before adding the finished design to your cart.
Check each square on its own
Look at faces, ears, hands and the edges of the group. Keep lettering comfortably inside the front face, away from fold lines, and make sure it is easy to read against the photo.
Start with the original image from your phone or camera. A square saved from social media may have fewer pixels than the original; a tight crop reduces the usable file further.
Check the squares together
For a matching wall display, give faces a similar scale and keep the treatment of colour and text consistent. A mixture of very close portraits and distant subjects can look uneven even when every canvas is the same size.
Select the wrap for each design. Gallery Wrap continues the image onto the sides; Mirror Wrap uses reflected edge detail; Color Wrap uses solid-colour sides. Review the choices shown on your product.
Need a second look? Send us your original photo and intended square size for advice. The preview helps you check composition; it does not by itself prove how much fine detail an enlarged print will show.
Square Canvas Prints FAQ
Answers about square crops, matching displays and ordering in New Zealand.
Can a rectangular photo be printed on a square canvas?
Yes, if you are happy with the square crop. Check the people and objects around the edges in the editor. A photo with little room around its subject may work better in its original rectangular shape.
Will a larger square size show more of my photo?
Changing size keeps the same 1:1 front proportion. At the same front crop and zoom, it will not restore cropped sides. Check the preview again after changing the size or wrap.
Does the subject have to be in the centre?
No. A centred portrait can feel balanced, while an off-centre subject can leave space for scenery or text. Choose the crop that best preserves the photo’s meaning and leaves important details safely inside the front face.
Can I use a square photo downloaded from social media?
You can, but the original file is preferable. A downloaded copy may have been compressed. Check the remaining detail after cropping, especially for a large print, or ask us to assess the image.
Can I order several squares for a gallery wall?
Yes. Order the required number of individual canvases, each with its own image and design. Choose matching dimensions and plan the total wall space, including the gaps. The arrangements above are planning examples rather than package offers.
Will the canvas arrive ready to hang, and is an outer frame included?
The stretched canvas is supplied on an inner timber frame, ready for wall display. An outer floating frame is a separate finish; explore floating frame canvas prints if you want one.
What are the delivery cost and usual timing in New Zealand?
NZ delivery is NZ$9.95 per order. Many canvas orders arrive around 5–7 working days from full payment, depending on the product, location, workload and courier conditions. Contact us before ordering if you have a deadline.
