Frame only · For an existing stretched canvas
Give Your 16 × 20 Canvas a Finished Floating Look
Add a clean surround to artwork you already own with a 16x20 floating frame for canvas. A floater frame leaves a visible gap around the canvas, giving the piece definition while keeping its front surface on display.
The 16 × 20 name refers to an inch-based canvas format. Its nominal metric equivalent is 40.64 × 50.8 cm. Measure your actual stretched canvas and check the fit before choosing your frame.
Frame only. Canvas, artwork, printing and canvas stretching are not included. Your existing canvas needs to be fitted and secured inside the frame before hanging.
16 × 20 Inches and 40 × 50 cm Are Different Sizes
These labels are sometimes used interchangeably for prints, but they should not be treated as identical when buying a frame for an existing canvas.
| Canvas label | Dimensions in cm | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 16 × 20 inches | 40.64 × 50.8 | Exact unit conversion of the nominal inch size. |
| 40 × 50 cm | 40 × 50 | A separate metric size, smaller in both directions. |
The difference matters: a nominal 16 × 20 inch canvas is 0.64 cm wider and 0.8 cm taller than a 40 × 50 cm canvas in portrait orientation. A size label alone does not establish whether either one will fit a particular frame.
In landscape orientation, the nominal dimensions are 50.8 × 40.64 cm. These figures describe the canvas format, not the finished outside dimensions of the floating frame.
If your canvas is labelled 40 × 50 cm or another metric size, explore our Custom Floating Frame for Canvas and use your actual measurements when checking the options.
Measure the Canvas You Have, Not Just Its Label
A canvas sold as 16 × 20 inches may vary slightly after stretching. Record three checks in centimetres so the frame fit can be assessed using the actual piece.
Actual Width & Height
Measure the outside edges of the stretched canvas, including the fabric wrapped around the stretcher. Keep any decimals rather than rounding the measurements to 40 × 50 cm or to the nominal inch conversion.
Canvas Depth
Measure from the front surface to the back of the wooden stretcher. Record the thickness in cm; for example, 20 mm is 2 cm. Width and height do not tell you whether a canvas has enough space to sit and be fixed correctly.
Stretcher Shape
Check the width and height at more than one point. Note bowed sides, uneven corners, raised staples or existing fittings that could affect the opening or make the visible gap uneven.
Understand Frame Profile and Canvas Depth
The illustration shows an L-shaped profile that supports the canvas from behind while creating the surrounding border. Its overall height is a different measurement from the usable space available for the canvas.
Your canvas depth affects the position of its front surface and how it can be secured. A shallower canvas can sit further back, while a deeper stretcher may extend beyond the intended position. Check the usable depth and fixing arrangement for the frame you select.
The floating gap is separate from the canvas dimensions. For a fit enquiry, provide the actual canvas measurements without adding your own allowance. Include front, side and back photos if the stretcher is uneven or unusually deep.
Seven Frame Finishes to Complement Your Artwork
Choose Black or White for a simple surround, Woodgrain or Light Woodgrain for a wood-look effect, or Gold, Antique Gold or Silver for a decorative accent. Compare the finishes with your artwork and the room where it will hang.
Choosing and Ordering Your Frame
Have your canvas's actual width, height and depth ready, and check them against the frame's supported fit. Then choose the orientation, finish and quantity using the product options above.
Review the selected option's price and your delivery total before completing the order. If your measured canvas differs from the supported dimensions, do not substitute the closest size or leave a size change only in Order Notes; the fit and price need to be confirmed first.
The 16 × 20 name is a useful size reference. The correct fit still depends on the real canvas dimensions, usable frame opening, depth and intended gap.
Fitting, Hanging and Everyday Care
Dry-fit the canvas before securing it. Centre it within the surround and check that the gap is even on all four sides and that the front sits in the intended position.
Use a fixing method suited to the frame profile and wooden canvas stretcher. Wall fixings must suit the finished weight and wall type. A professional picture framer can help with mounting valuable, fragile or uneven artwork.
Dust the frame with a soft, dry cloth. Keep cleaning liquids off the artwork and avoid prolonged direct sunlight, excessive heat and moisture.
