FRAME ONLY · FOR EXISTING STRETCHED CANVAS

Find a Floating Frame for Your Canvas

Finish a canvas you already own with a decorative outer frame. Floating frames, also called canvas floater frames, surround a stretched canvas with a visible shadow gap for a clean, defined border.

Frame only — canvas and printing are not included. Measure your canvas width, height and depth before choosing a frame.

Need a new print made from your photo? Choose floating frame canvas prints for the printed and framed option.

Choose Your Frame by Canvas Size

Start with the canvas you have. A frame must suit its actual dimensions and depth, as well as the finish you prefer.

Open Custom Floating Frame to see the listed size and finish options. Compare the product's fit information with your canvas measurements before selecting.

Have a 16 × 20 Inch Canvas?

Explore the dedicated 16x20 frame. The exact conversion is 40.64 × 50.8 cm; measure your own stretched canvas and check the frame's supported depth.

How to Measure a Canvas for a Floating Frame

Measure the actual outside edges of the stretched canvas, including the wrapped fabric. Use the canvas itself, rather than its original print size or an existing decorative frame.

  1. Width

Measure from the left outer edge to the right outer edge, with the artwork in its intended hanging orientation.

  2. Height

Measure from the top outer edge to the bottom outer edge. Keep the width and height labels consistent with the hanging orientation.

  3. Depth

Measure the thickness from the front surface to the back of the stretched canvas. This is separate from its width and height.

Keep the units clear. Record measurements in centimetres, or use millimetres if more precise detail is needed, and follow the units shown in the product options. Do not round a measurement to a nearby listed size simply to make it match.

Canvas Size, Frame Depth and Shadow Gap

These measurements describe different parts of the fit. Matching the width and height alone does not establish whether the canvas will sit correctly inside a frame.

Canvas Dimensions

The outside width, height and depth of your existing stretched canvas. Check whether the selected product size describes the canvas it fits, the inner frame opening or the overall outside frame dimensions.

Usable Frame Depth

The space and fixing position available for your canvas. A frame's total profile depth is not necessarily its supported canvas depth.

Shadow Gap

The visible space between the canvas and the surrounding frame. The overall outside frame dimensions also include the frame itself.

Do not add an assumed gap to your canvas measurements. Follow the selected product's sizing instructions so that any fitting allowance is handled once.

A shallow canvas can sit below the frame face; a deeper canvas may project above it. Check the supported depth and intended front position before ordering.

Unsure Whether Your Canvas Will Fit?

For a canvas that is bowed, out of square or an unusual thickness, send the actual measurements and clear photos of its front, side and back. We can help you check suitability before you order.

Choose the Finish and Understand the Material

Choose from the finishes offered on your selected product. Consider the artwork's colours and the room where it will hang.

A Defined Border

A dark finish adds contrast around light artwork and can complement bold graphics or black-and-white images.

A Softer Outline

A light finish creates a gentler outline and can suit pale walls, soft colours and restrained interiors.

Warmer Tones

A wood-look finish can complement timber furniture and earthy colours. Its appearance alone does not establish the frame material.

Material and finish are different specifications. A wood-look polymer frame and a real wood frame have different constructions. Terms such as oak colour or natural finish can describe appearance; use the stated material to understand what you are buying.

Fitting Your Existing Canvas into the Frame

Your canvas must be secured inside the floating frame before the finished piece is hung. An assembled empty frame and a framed artwork ready to hang are different things.

Before Ordering

  • Check whether the outer frame is supplied assembled or requires assembly.
  • Review the canvas fixing method, included hardware and tools needed.
  • Confirm the hanging arrangement for your artwork's orientation.

When Fitting Your Canvas

  • Use the fitting method specified for the selected frame.
  • Position the canvas with an even gap before securing it.
  • Use wall fixings suitable for the finished weight and your wall type.

Floating Frames for Canvas: FAQs

Practical answers about frame-only purchases and fitting an existing canvas.

Does the price include a printed canvas?

This collection is for frames only. Canvas printing, stretching and artwork are not included. Choose the floating frame canvas prints collection if you want a new printed and framed canvas.

Are a floating frame and a floater frame the same thing?

For stretched canvas, these names commonly describe the same style of outer frame: the canvas sits inside it with a visible gap around the edges. Exact construction and fit depend on the frame profile.

Can I frame a canvas bought from another shop?

Fit depends on the actual canvas dimensions, depth and construction, rather than where it was bought. Compare those measurements with the selected frame's specifications. The measurement guide explains what to record.

Is 16 × 20 inches the same as 40 × 50 cm?

No. 16 × 20 inches converts to 40.64 × 50.8 cm. That difference matters when fitting an existing canvas into a frame. Use its actual measured size and the product's fit instructions.

Should I add extra space for the floating gap?

Do not add an assumed allowance. Follow the selected product's instructions about whether its size describes the canvas it fits, the inner frame opening or the overall outside frame dimensions. The gap must be accounted for once, rather than added twice.

Can I use a floating frame for rolled canvas, photos or posters?

These frames are intended for stretched canvases. Rolled canvas needs stretching first; loose paper artwork requires a suitable mounting or framing method. Do not assume an empty canvas frame will hold loose artwork without that preparation.

Will the frame overlap the front of my artwork?

A floating frame surrounds the canvas with a shadow gap instead of overlapping the front image like a conventional picture-frame border. How much of the canvas side remains visible depends on the frame profile and how the canvas sits inside it.

What if my canvas is not perfectly square?

Measure the width and height at more than one point. If the measurements differ, the canvas is bowed or its corners are uneven, use the fit-check guidance before choosing a frame.

Have your canvas width, height and depth ready, then compare the available frames, finishes and fitting details.
